Home Maintenance Checklist for Fall and Winter

This morning, we were surprised to find seven inches of fresh snow. It is much too early for all of this, and my heart rate is still coming down from the struggle of finding hats, snowpants, and matching mittens for each of my children before sending them out the door for school. As much as I would like to deny it, winter is on its way.

Here is a checklist of fall and winter home maintenance tasks to prepare your home (and your family) for the colder temperatures ahead.

Scrape peeling paint, and apply touch up paint to your siding, trim, and fences.

Check the condition of your deck and apply a waterproofing sealer if necessary.

Indoor Gardening Through Those Cold Winter Months

Indoor gardening during those long cold months of winter can keep the excitement of your gardening experiences going. Having a garden in the home can really add to your decor and aid to your health at the same time. Indoor gardening helps to add moisture to the air as well as filter the air by exchanging carbon dioxide for oxygen through plants.

This method of gardening is no more demanding than an outdoor garden and you don’t have to have a lot of room to do it. All you need is the basics to have a successful indoor garden, light, nutrients and water.

Container Gardening – Ideal During Winter

Green vegetation and colorful blossoms add color to the surroundings. However during the winter months, the landscape appears drab and depressing which is a grouse that most people have, besides complaints of freezing temperatures. Probably, any color appearing during November through February would be due to holiday displays. Winter container gardening is a beautiful way to spruce up the front of the house, the patio or deck with colorful displays of plants and flowers.

Container gardening in the ordinary sense is very easy and convenient, because any type of container will serve the purpose. Winter container gardening on the other hand needs to be approached differently. The container must be frost proof. Selection of the right type of container is of paramount importance. Ceramic or terracotta pots are not the best choice for winter gardening, as they tend to crumble in extremely cold climates. Metal, wood or resin containers with the customary drainage hole are ideal for winter container gardening.
